History

Mid Northumberland Chorus was established in 1981 by Audrey Stimpson from an earlier chamber choir conducted by Michael Doswell. Audrey Stimpson conducted and ran the choir until her untimely death in 1999. Since then the present musical director, Norma Jewitt, has most ably conducted affairs assisted by an elected committee and on occasion by guest conductors Derek Hobbs and Robin Forbes.

Since its formation the Chorus has presented an average of five concerts a year, some in local churches, some in larger venues such as leisure centres in Ashington, Cramlington, Hexham and Morpeth; and at Newcastle Cathedral. Concerts are often arranged in collaboration with other choral groups and/or orchestras.

A lottery grant in 1998 provided funds to buy a portable, high quality, electronic piano. This has enabled us to perform in venues where no other instrument is available. Concerts have therefore been enabled to take place in locations such as Acklington, Amble, Brinkburn Abbey, Chollerton, Felton, Longhirst, Rothbury, Shilbottle, Walton, Warkworth and Wooler.

The Chorus currently numbers some 80 members and its ambition is to become large enough to perform larger works on our own.
